What: Kailash Ecovillage in Portland turns urine into fertilizer, approved by the city and inspiring a resource management revolution!
Options for utilizing the Urine at Kailash:
Option 1: Use our public "Urination Station" (pictured above), where urine is collected directly into large IBC totes.
Option 2: Collect urine privately at home in a small bottle and, once full, manually pour into the same IBC tote. Before reusing the bottle, wash it thoroughly and pour excess water onto adjacent bamboo or fruit trees.
The Cycle:
Once the first IBC tote is filled, it's capped and the system moves to the second tote.
This process continues until the third tote is complete.
Then, the nutrient-rich liquid from the first tote is diverted onto raspberries, fruit trees, and other perennial plants, completing the sustainable cycle.
